Dr. Jess Gilbert

Clinical Psychologist

About me.

As a therapist, I am warm, compassionate, and grounded. My approach is open, nonjudgemental, and I encourage clients to come as they are. As well as practicing at PsyQuest, I am a clinician at the Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC) in the Department of Health, where I provide trauma-focused therapy and support for people navigating the impacts of sexual trauma.

In my therapeutic practice, I focus on working with adults experiencing a range of life's challenges, including depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, relational issues, identity exploration, understanding sense of self, and processing trauma. I am particularly passionate about supporting LGBTQIA+ people and have many years of experience contributing to LGBTQIA+ community organisations in Perth. I strive to create a therapeutic space where clients feel safe, seen, and supported on their unique journeys.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in the therapy relationship. I bring a psychodynamic frame to understanding people and their experiences, bringing unconscious issues and links into awareness, and understanding the present through gentle consideration of past and especially childhood experiences.

My practice is informed by the frameworks of Schema Therapy, EMDR, and I enjoy integrating other evidence-based approaches such as ACT and DBT skills, with a particular focus on attachment and understanding the impact of trauma on emotions, relationships, and sense of self. I work collaboratively with clients to help them process their experiences, build inner strength, and create meaningful connections with themselves and others.

In addition to my clinical work, I have a strong research background that supports my commitment to evidence-based practice as a psychologist. As a postdoctoral research fellow, I conducted projects exploring the link between community connection and mental health, and more recently focused on parents’ experiences navigating support services for their LGBTQA+ children—insights that continue to shape my affirming and inclusive approach to therapy.

Underneath it all, I am a down-to-earth and empathic person who genuinely cares about helping others embrace who they are and create meaningful change. Therapy can feel daunting, but together we can create a space where you feel safe to explore your emotions, grow in self-understanding, and build a life that feels connected and fulfilling.
